Quality criteria

What makes a good
Perth kitchen
renovation.

What makes a good Perth kitchen renovation. The unglamorous things that separate a kitchen that lasts twenty years from one that delaminates at year five. Most don’t show in finished photos. All of them matter.

Cabinetry substrate

HMR, not standard MDF.

Kitchen cabinetry should be built from high-moisture-resistant board, not standard MDF. Sink and dishwasher cabinets see water for the entire life of the kitchen — substrate matters more than door colour.

Stone joins

Mitred, not butt-joined.

Stone benchtop joins should be mitred and resin-joined by a licensed stonemason — not butted with silicone. The difference shows immediately and gets worse with daily wear.

Hardware

Soft-close by default.

Drawer runners and hinges from named manufacturers — Blum, Hettich, Salice — not unbranded units. Soft-close is the test of whether the kitchen was built or assembled.

Ventilation

Ducted, not recirculating.

Rangehoods should duct grease and steam outside the building, not recirculate it through a charcoal filter. We design ducting routes at the brief stage so you’re not sold the easy option later.

Lighting

Three layers at minimum.

Task lighting under wall units, ambient lighting for the room, feature lighting over an island or splashback. Single-layer kitchen lighting is the most common compromise — and the easiest to live with badly.

Electrical

Dedicated circuits.

Oven, cooktop, dishwasher and rangehood need dedicated circuits. Cheap kitchen electrical doubles up — and trips when you run two appliances together. Licensed electrician, certified at handover.

Design & fixed price

Detailed cabinetry design with elevations and 3D views. Stone selection visit. Fixed-price contract before anything is ordered.

Handover & certificate

Defects closed pre-handover. Electrical and plumbing certificates filed. Cabinetry warranty documents passed through.

Common questions

Kitchen renovations
Perth
the questions we
get.

The questions Perth homeowners ask before a kitchen renovation brief. Plain answers, plain English.

Three weeks for a refresh keeping the existing layout. Four weeks for a full strip-and-rebuild within the same footprint. Five-plus weeks for a high-end or layout-changing build. The headline number is on-site time — add 4–6 weeks lead-time for cabinetry and stone fabrication before that.

We always set up a temporary kitchen — typically in a laundry, garage or covered outdoor area — with sink access, microwave, kettle and basic prep space. Fridge stays accessible throughout. Most clients eat in for 2–3 weeks of the build comfortably.

Yes — you can supply oven, cooktop, rangehood, dishwasher and fridge yourself. We’ll need exact model numbers at the design stage so cabinetry openings, electrical loads and ducting routes can be specified correctly. Late appliance changes are the single biggest cause of programme slips on kitchen renovations.

Natural stone is unique-piece, varies by slab, and needs sealing. Engineered stone is consistent, harder, and lower maintenance — though the high-silica products are now restricted in WA. Porcelain composites are the newer mid-ground. We’ll walk through pros and cons at the brief stage based on your use and budget.

Most internal kitchen renovations don’t require council approval — work happens within the existing footprint and structure. Approval is required if you’re removing a load-bearing wall to open the kitchen onto another room, or extending the building. We assess this at the brief stage.

Most kitchen renovation companies Perth-wide are cabinetmakers selling installation — they design and supply the cabinetry, then sub the building work to whoever’s available. GPD is different: a single WA-licensed builder runs every job. As a kitchen renovation company Perth homeowners brief directly, the builder coordinates cabinetmaker, stonemason, electrician and plumber under one head contract.
